Several Hollywood celebrities are making more than a fashion statement on the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards show in Los Angeles, they’re also getting political.
Lin Manuel-Miranda of “Hamilton” fame, actress Ruth Negga of the Oscar-nominated film “Loving,” Barry Jenkins, the director of “Moonlight,” and more could be seen Sunday evening sporting blue ribbons that support the American Civil Liberties Union.
ACLU National’s Twitter account confirmed the ribbons are theirs, and are reportedly related to the group’s Stand with ACLU effort. “It’s a ribbon that says you stand for people’s rights,” the group said in one tweet.
The ACLU led the charge to in launching a legal challenge against President Trump’s executive order that temporarily banned refugees as well as immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries with a high terror risk. Though the order has since been frozen in the court system, the Trump administration has said it is working on a revamped order.
Lin Manuel-Miranda and his mother, Dr. Luz Towns-Miranda, had ACLU ribbons pinned to their outfits.

So did Ruth Negga, who starred in “Loving,” a film about the story behind the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case in 1967 that eventually put an end to laws that prohibited interracial marriage.
