KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Witnesses say Sudanese riot police have used tear gas to break up a small demonstration of students at the University of Khartoum. They were protesting government plans to cut fuel subsidies and raise public transportation fares, among steps to cut government spending.

The witnesses said police vehicles were stationed at intersections leading to the downtown Khartoum campus during the disturbance Wednesday. There were no reports of casualties or arrests.
