North Carolina’s governor refused to bow to President Trump’s demand to give an immediate answer on whether the Republican National Convention could move ahead with “full attendance” in August.
Trump threatened to move the convention out of the state if Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, was unable to guarantee the gathering would not have limits on attendance because of the coronavirus pandemic.
A spokesperson for Cooper said state health officials were working with the Republican National Committee but did not say whether restrictions would be in place.
“North Carolina is relying on data and science to protect our state’s public health and safety,” the spokesperson said in a statement Monday.
North Carolina is in its second phase of reopening, and gatherings are still limited to 10 people.
The convention is set for Aug. 24-27 in Charlotte, and at least 50,000 attendees are expected.
