Trump supporter Ben Carson argued that Bill Clinton was wrong to call many of the members of the Republican’s base “your standard redneck” because “I don’t think I’m a redneck.”
“I know a lot of people who are not rednecks who are ardent Trump supporters, including yours truly. I don’t think I’m a redneck,” Carson said on Fox News Wednesday morning.
Clinton this week claimed “The other guy’s base is what I grew up in” while campaigning for his wife Hillary Clinton. “You know, I’m basically your standard redneck.”
Carson, a former Republican presidential candidate, said he thinks this election is proving to be “about the people vs. the political establishment.”
“The political establishment consists of Democrats and Republicans. And they identify with each other more so than they do with the people. I think a lot of people recognize that. That’s why two out of three Americans feel we are on the wrong track and need to change directions. It would be more than two out of three if Americans actually paid attention to what’s going on.”
The retired neurosurgeon said he continues to support Trump because of the candidate’s “big heart” for others, stating “this is a man who does things for people he doesn’t even know when he knows they are in need.” A number of Republicans refused to campaign for their party’s nominee after a 2005 video of Trump making lewd comments about women surfaced on Friday.
“He loves our country and wants it to be successful. That’s why I’m sticking by him. I recognize that the alternative is the continuation down the secular progressive pathway and America won’t be what it was meant to be.”
