GOP congressman joins conservatives in dissing Trump for celebrating anniversary of Chinese communist rule

Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy dissed President Trump for celebrating the anniversary of China’s communist rule on Tuesday.

“Congratulations to President Xi and the Chinese people on the 70th Anniversary of the People’s Republic of China!” Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

The congratulatory tweet was widely mocked and criticized for its support of a communist regime. In particular, Roy quote tweeted the president and added, “I will pass.”

The freshman congressman was not the only conservative to express his distaste at the president’s remarks. Fox News political analyst Brit Hume responded to Trump’s tweet, saying, “This is gross. Celebrating a brutal dictatorship on its survival.”

Never Trumper Bill Kristol, the founder of the The Weekly Standard before it shuttered months ago, tweeted, “Congratulations to the people of Hong Kong for standing up for freedom. And best wishes to the people of China for freedom and democracy in the near future.”

“I don’t celebrate the Soviet revolution in Russia, the Nazi takeover of Germany, or the Khmer Rouge taking power in Cambodia,” Dan McLaughlin, a contributing columnist for National Review, tweeted. “For the same reasons, I do not celebrate Chairman Mao’s revolution in China.”

Brent Bozell also weighed, expressing shock at the president’s tweet, adding, “Tell us someone stole your phone this morning.”
