District hires parking czar

The District has hired a new parking guru to run the city’s some 17,000 metered parking spaces and streetlight program, the District Department of Transportation said Monday.

Angelo Rao will be DDOT’s new citywide program support manager, a key position after the recent flub of red-topped parking meters for handicapped drivers.

The civil engineer by training comes to the city from a job as a traffic engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation and previously worked in St. Petersburg, Fla., Toronto and Ontario.

“Angelo is a dynamic, proactive and innovative leader with a wide range of experience and expertise,” DDOT Director Terry Bellamy said. “He understands the engineering and the public realm, and can help us marry the two to improve our transportation system and support Mayor Gray’s vision for a Sustainable DC.”
