Outgoing Chancellor Michelle Rhee is “seriously considering” becoming the education commissioner of New Jersey, a local paper reports.
According to The Star Ledger, Rhee first turned down Gov. Chris Christie’s offer because she confused it for the Newark superintendency; however, Rhee became more intrigued by the state-level position.
Still, Rhee is hesitating because her fiance, Kevin Johnson, is the mayor of Sacramento, Calif., and she is tempted to consolidate her family. Rhee has two children enrolled in D.C. public schools.
Rhee declined to comment on whether she had received the offer or whether or not she was interested in the position on CNN. “I’m still thinking about all my options and where I would have the best impact for kids,” Rhee said.
Rhee stepped down as the D.C. public schools chancellor on Oct. 13, an expected move after Council Chairman Vincent Gray defeated her boss Mayor Adrian Fenty in the Democratic primary, which many viewed as a referendum on her school reforms.
