President Trump is slated to announce the creation of a commission on Thursday that will examine the integrity of the 2016 election as well as long-standing problems with the voting system as a whole, a White House official confirmed to the Washington Examiner.
Vice President Mike Pence will lead the commission, the official said.
Trump has repeatedly questioned the integrity of the most recent presidential election, claiming millions of people may have cast illegal ballots that ultimately denied him a victory in the symbolic popular vote. No evidence of widespread voter fraud has surfaced to date.
But flaws in the voter registration system have previously been the subject of nonpartisan scrutiny, and the White House has pointed to studies that show an excess of invalid registrations to back up Trump’s voter fraud allegations.
The president is expected to unveil the election commission on Thursday by signing an executive order.
A spokesman for the vice president did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Pence’s role in the commission.
