STAFFORD, Va. (AP) — The Virginia National Guard is welcoming members of the General Assembly to a Stafford County site where 80 engineering and bridge-building troops are doing prep work for a Civil War park.
The walking tour Thursday will offer legislators a look at the work soldiers from Powhatan, Petersburg, and Bowling Green have done on phase two of the Stafford County project. The work involves the removal of undergrowth, the hauling of fill and roadway construction.
The work is being conducted as part of the guard’s two-week annual training. The Innovative Readiness Training program allows engineers to put their military skills to work on projects.
The planned Stafford Civil War Park includes Union battery fortifications, winter quarters encampments and a pre-Civil War sandstone bridge.
