More than $100,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe campaign to help support Christine Blasey Ford’s security needs that she has incurred after being identified as the woman who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.
The GoFundMe campaign was created on Tuesday by Heidi Feldman, a faculty member at Georgetown Law School, and exceeded its initial goal of $100,000 in less than 24 hours.
“Due to death threats, Dr. Christine Basey Ford (who uses ‘Dr. Blasey’ professionally) and her family have had to leave their residence and arrange for private security,” Feldman wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Let’s create a fund to cover her security expenses, to do just a bit to make it easier for women in her position to come forward despite great risks.”
Ford has accused Kavanaugh of forcing himself upon her in the 1980s while they were both in high school. Ford’s lawyers claimed that she has been forced to move and has encountered death threats.
“She’s been the target of vicious harassment and even death threats,” Ford’s lawyers wrote on Tuesday. “As a result of these kinds of threats, her family was forced to relocate out of their home. Her email has been hacked, and she has been impersonated online.”
After Ford’s allegation were revealed, the Senate Judiciary Committee scheduled a public hearing for Monday. Kavanaugh has rejected the accusation, but said he would testify. Ford’s lawyers claimed Tuesday she wants the FBI to investigate the allegation before testifying.
Republicans still hope Ford will choose to appear for a hearing Monday, and while one of Ford’s lawyers said that Ford is open to talking with the committee, they said she is “not prepared to talk with them at a hearing on Monday.”
