Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo endorsed Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker on Tuesday.
Pompeo, seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2024, recently came in third place in a straw poll of conservative activists. The former Trump administration official is navigating between his own presidential ambitions and his efforts to remain an ally of former President Donald Trump. Pompeo’s endorsement of Walker puts the two potential rivals on the same page in Georgia’s Senate race this year, as Walker has already been endorsed by Trump.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, whose relationship with Trump fractured in the wake of the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, also endorsed Walker in the race, despite misgivings about Walker’s record of past behavior, including threatening his ex-wife.
In a statement, Pompeo said, “Taking back the Senate and stopping President Biden’s reckless agenda depends on Georgians sending a conservative fighter to represent them in the United States Senate, and Herschel Walker is the leader for the job.”
“He has lived the American Dream, and he will fight with all that he has to keep the American Dream alive for future generations,” Pompeo said. “Herschel has my full support, and I will do everything I can to help him win Georgia and put our nation back on the right track.”
Walker said in his own statement, “It is an honor to have the support of former Secretary Mike Pompeo.”
“Secretary Pompeo has been a bold leader in the State Department, CIA, Congress, and in our great military,” Walker said. “He is a great addition to Team Herschel, and I look forward to seeing what we will accomplish together as we fight to win back the State of Georgia!”

Walker backed out of an event this week with controversial Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is facing backlash for speaking at a white nationalist event. Walker’s campaign did not comment on his reasons for backing out to local news outlets.
