House Democrats obtain Trump’s federal tax returns from IRS

The House Ways and Means Committee has obtained six years of former President Donald Trump‘s federal tax returns after the Supreme Court denied his bid to shield his records earlier this month.

The Treasury Department complied with the high court order last week allowing his documents to be handed over to the committee, according to a spokesperson from the department.

“Treasury has complied with last week’s court decision,” a spokesperson told the Washington Examiner. The Treasury Department is the parent of the IRS.

The committee, led by Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), had sought Trump’s records since 2019 in order to investigate whether the IRS audit of the former president was conducted fully and appropriately.

Trump’s records are not expected to be immediately released to the public, according to CNN. The Treasury Department declined to tell the Washington Examiner whether the House committee had accessed the documents Wednesday evening.

Although the Treasury Department refused to provide records during Trump’s term in office, the Biden administration contended that federal law is clear and allows the committee to oversee any taxpayer returns, including the former president’s. The change of guard prompted Neal to renew his request for five years of income tax returns from Trump and his businesses from 2015-2020.
