Bully Free DC Day, or day four of spring break

Mayor Vincent Gray declared Thursday to be “Bully Free DC Day,” an interesting choice considering D.C. public schools are on spring break through Monday. But hey — that makes it unlikely any kid is being bullied in school today. Touche, mayor.

Bullying is a problem that is increasingly terrorizing more young people at school,” Mayor Gray wrote in the proclamation. “Bully Free DC Day will help combat this problem…I call upon all the residents of this great city to join me in increasing public awareness about the growth and ill effects of the behavior we know as bullying.”

Jeffrey Richardson, director of the mayor’s office of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender affairs, is scheduled to read the proclamation at 12 p.m. on the steps of the John A. Wilson Building, at a rally sponsored with DC Safe Schools Coalition.

“Mayor Gray’s proclamation highlights his commitment to fostering an environment where all children and youth are able to learn and develop in schools and communities that are safe and supportive,” said Richardson. “Every child deserves a learning environment where every day is a bully free day and we stand firm in our support of all efforts to combat bullying in the District of Columbia.”
