Maryland public school parents eligible for state award

Know a parent that really makes a difference in education? Or how about another legal guardian who’s working to make schools better? Nominate ’em for Maryland’s fourth annual Parent Involvement Matters Awards.

The Maryland State Department of Education partners with Comcast to honor students’ caretakers “whose exemplary contributions to public education have led to improvements for Maryland’s public school children, teachers, schools, programs and/or policies.”

Last year’s winner was Anne Arundel’s Jeffrey Macis, a naval officer who led efforts to turn around two middle schools, despite having children too young for the schools themselves. The schools are now leading magnets.

Nominees must be parents or legal guardians of children enrolled in Maryland public schools; they may not be employees of Comcast, the state department of education, or the public school system. A semifinalist will be selected from each of Maryland’s 23 counties and from Baltimore City before five finalists are chosen. The winner will be announced in the spring.
