Sitting beside his wife, Republican North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson expressed regret for their decision to pursue an abortion in 1989.
Robinson’s video posted to his social media accounts came in response to uproar over a recently resurfaced comment he made on a Facebook post in 2012 in which he admitted to paying for his wife’s abortion. In Thursday’s message, he conveyed hope that by sharing his story, “it may change the lives of others.”

“It was the hardest decision we have ever made, and, sadly, we made the wrong one,” the lieutenant governor bemoaned in the video. “This decision has been with us ever since. It’s because of this experience and our spiritual journey that we are so adamantly pro-life.”
Robinson noted he was not married to his wife, Yolanda Robinson, when she received the abortion. Yolanda Robinson did not speak during the minute-long video but nodded along with him at times. The Robinsons have two children and two grandchildren.
“We know what it’s like to be in that situation,” he added. “We know the pain that abortion causes. For everyone that had this experience and carries that burden, we want you to know you are not alone. Furthermore, we have a savior who forgives us of our sins.”
Earlier this week, a comment the lieutenant governor made on a Facebook post he made about 10 years ago resurfaced. During an exchange with another user in the comment section on a post he made criticizing religious people who vote for politicians who support gay marriage and abortion, Mark Robinson confessed to the abortion.
“I’m not saying abortion is wrong cause I said so, it’s wrong cause God says so. It’s wrong when others do it and it was wrong when I paid for it to be done to my unborn child in 1989,” he commented.
The lieutenant governor told WRAL he wanted to discuss his story publicly for years, but “there’s confidentiality that I have to be concerned about.”

Mark Robinson was elected lieutenant governor in 2020 in a tight race, becoming the first African American to hold that office in the state’s history. Last year, he said he was “95%” sure he’ll run for North Carolina governor in 2024, per WRAL. Opposition to abortion has been a staple of his political platform, and he previously attended the March for Life rally.
“We felt the need to speak with you directly because this issue transcends politics. Our hope is that by telling our story that it may change the lives of others,” Mark Robinson said in the video. “No one is perfect, but no one is too far gone to be saved.”
