No matter how much of a supposed “national security priority” ratifying the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty is, the Obama administration hasn’t been very impressive in the messaging department. They claim START needs to be ratified immediately, but have fallen short in explaining why.
Fortunately, this Campus Progress advertisement -which is airing aggressively on MSNBC’s morning shows- fills in the blanks:

Mystery solved! The Administration’s urgency is clear: If we don’t ratify this nuclear weapons treaty immediately, an asteroid (possibly Russian in origin) will end life on earth as we know it. Concerned citizens, call your Senators.
Exit fun fact: in Deep Impact, humanity is delivered from extinction by… nuclear weapons.
