House set to vote on articles of impeachment against Trump

House lawmakers will vote Wednesday on articles of impeachment against President Trump, a Democratic leadership aide said.

Rep. Al Green introduced articles of impeachment against Trump on Tuesday.

The Texas Democrat said Trump “has sown seeds of discord against the people of the United States and has shown he is not fit to be president of the United States.”

Green has twice previously tried to force a vote on impeaching Trump in 2017 and in 2018, when the House was under Republican control. In both instances, the motion was tabled by a House vote. About 50 Democrats backed impeachment in those two votes.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not support opening an impeachment inquiry against Trump. The California Democrat favors House investigations and other punitive measures, such as holding Trump administration officials in contempt and pursuing documents and witnesses in court.

On Tuesday, the House voted to rebuke Trump over tweets aimed at four liberal minority freshmen women. Pelosi tamped down efforts to hold a vote to censure the president, which would have been a far more serious punishment.

But Green believes his third attempt will win more backing from Democrats, who have stepped up calls for impeachment in recent months.

“To condemn a racist president is not enough, we must impeach him,” Green said. “This will be a defining vote. The world is watching, and history will judge us all.”
