Paul Ryan gets air cover after passing healthcare bill

A political nonprofit aligned with Speaker Paul Ryan is coming to the aid of the Wisconsin Republican, who has faced criticism from all sides after helping to pass a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare.

American Action Network is airing a television advertisement praising Ryan delivering on the GOP’s promise to pass the healthcare bill. The 30-second spot, backed by $500,000, is running in the speaker’s congressional district, and on national cable television shows that President Trump is known to watch: MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.”

“It’s a bold plan to cut the deficit and provide $1 trillion of job-creating tax relief,” the ad’s voiceover said. “It puts patients and doctors back in charge of healthcare.” The ad concludes: “Thank Paul Ryan and and House Republicans for keeping their word and fighting for the healthcare we deserve.”

Ryan, whose approval ratings are under water, has been attacked from the left for supporting legislation that critics argue would undo many of the insurance protections provided by former President Barack Obama’s healthcare law.

The speaker also has been targeted on the right. Some conservatives argue that the American Health Care Act doesn’t sufficiently dismantle Obamacare’s regulatory regime, while others accuse him of writing an unpopular bill that undermined President Trump.

This new ad is in addition to AAN’s $2 million air campaign for nearly two dozen House Republicans who supported the AHCA in a close vote on Thursday. The bill is now under consideration in the Senate.
