Andrew Yang scolds media: ‘We have to stop being obsessed over impeachment’

LOS ANGELES — Andrew Yang chided the media for breathlessly covering President Trump’s impeachment after the sixth Democratic primary debate opened with a question about the issue.

“We have to stop being obsessed over impeachment … and start digging in and solve the problems that got Donald Trump elected in the first place,” Yang said in Los Angeles.

The entrepreneur and nonprofit organization executive, 44, on Thursday urged the party to adopt a “positive” vision for the country because voters were losing trust with their lawmakers and political institutions.

The debate comes a day after the Democratic majority House voted for two articles of impeachment against Trump, over the Ukraine military aid affair.

The key issue for Yang’s 2020 presidential campaign is the problem posed to the U.S. economy by automation. He has surprised many political commentators with his White House bid’s longevity, outlasting traditional, establishment candidates to become the sole minority contender to qualify for the last debate of 2019.

Earlier in Thursday’s broadcast, PBS NewsHour anchor and debate moderator Judy Woodruff confused him with fellow lower-tier hopeful Tom Steyer, a billionaire hedge fund manager and Democratic megadonor.
