Speed cameras one step closer in Prince George’s County

The Prince George’s County delegation is introducing a bill in Annapolis to bring speed cameras to county roadways in light of last weekend’s Accokeek drag-racing crash in which eight people died and several others were injured.

The delegation approved the bill Thursday, and will introduce it soon, Sen. James Rosapepe, D-District 21, said. Speed cameras require authorization from the state.

Following the recent crash, neighbors said they repeatedly informed police of the late night drag racing, an increasingly popular pasttime on Maryland roads.

But “police can’t be physically on the road every minute, but a camera can be there 24/7 and it’s cost-efficient,” Rosapepe said. Gov. Martin O’Malley has proposed putting speed cameras near highway workers and school zones statewide.

Cameras already being used in Montgomery County have proven to be a deterrent to speeders, county police said. –
