Harry Reid tells Sanders it’s time to ‘give up’

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid believes it is time for Sen. Bernie Sanders to give up his presidential bid and stop campaigning before the Democratic National Convention in July.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the longtime senator said that Sanders should learn sooner rather than later that it’s time to “give up” and accept the delegate math, which Clinton continues to lead by nearly every measure.

“I’ve never been too good at math but I can figure that one out. I think he better do a little mathing,” Reid told the AP.

“No, I don’t think he should [continue campaigning through the convention]. I don’t know what that’s going to prove,” Reid said. “Sometimes you just have to give up. I’ve lost before. The numbers aren’t there.”

The Nevada senator also said that no matter what happens after next week’s Tuesday primaries, he doesn’t plan on telling Sanders what to do going forward.

“I don’t think I’m the one to deliver that message. If he calls and asks me I’ll be happy to, but I’m not going to go chasing him around to tell him what math is,” Reid said.

Reid’s comments come less than a week before the California primary, where Sanders and Clinton are both campaigning heavily. Clinton currently holds a six point lead over Sanders in the state, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average, but recent polls show the race closer.
