Fenty leaves door open for write-in campaign

Mayor Adrian Fenty says he won’t endorse the ongoing write-in campaign for the general election, but he left the door open Wednesday for accepting the votes if the campaign were to trump Democratic mayoral nominee Vince Gray in November.

D.C. election law requires that candidates who win a write-in campaign to formally accept the votes within seven days. When asked whether he would do that if the write-in campaign that’s pushing for his re-election were somehow to beat the long odds against it, Fenty would only say that his plan is to continue supporting the likely next mayor — Gray.

“I will spend my time running the city as I was sworn to do,” Fenty said following the announcement that D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee is leaving at the end of the month.”I will continue supporting [D.C. Council] Chairman Gray as the winner in November.”

Despite a blanket invitation, Fenty also won’t be joining Gray at any of the town hall meetings the chairman is holding in each of the city’s eight wards, saying he doesn’t think it would help Gray.

“[Gray] has proven his politics, at least this year, were better than mine,” Fenty said.
