Columbia man gets 5 years added to 35-year sentence in burglary case

A Columbia man who was involved in a shootout with the Howard County police?s SWAT team in 2006 had another five years tacked on to his 35-year sentence Monday.

Delcarlos Johnnie Jacobs, 23, pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary in front of Howard Circuit

Judge Dennis Sweeney as part of a plea bargain, dismissing three other charges including malicious destruction of property over $500.

Police were investigating Jacobs over a report of breaking and entering in January 2006 when the shootout occurred.

The burglary charge was severed from the charges resulting from the shootout, Assistant State?s Attorney James Dietrich said.

The police?s Property Crimes Detectives and Tactical Section were conducting surveillance on Jacobs and his brother, Kenneth Jacobs, in February 2006 to find them so a search and seizure warrant could be issued, according to court records.

During the surveillance, Delcarlos Jacobs realized police were following him and his brother. Delcarlos Jacobs pointed a rifle at police and fired a single shot, according to court records.

The shot prompted police to shoot 29 rounds at Jacobs; no one was injured, according to court records.

When police searched Jacobs? apartment in Harper?s Choice in Columbia, they found the stolen items linking him to the robbery.

Jacobs was sentenced in February to 35 years after being found guilty of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, all charges stemming from the shootout.
