Develop awareness

Welcome back to the fifth week of our On-the-Go series! This week’s dose is a simple method on reconnecting with your body.

By observing your breath and the sensations within your body throughout your day (when the phone rings, when your boss asks to see you, when that not-so-pleasant e-mail arrives, when the baby cries), you can begin to awaken to that strong interplay between your mind and body. This awareness allows you to rebound so that you aren’t catering to your mind’s every whim and occasional self-induced drama. Sound familiar?

To begin this journey, take a moment to be in your body. Find a comfortable place to sit comfortably. This can be done on the metro, at the office, in a plane, or on a park bench during lunch — wherever you can carve out space in your schedule. Rest your hands onto your thighs, lengthen through the crown of your head, draw your shoulder blades down your back to lift your chest, and close your eyes. Focus on each breath in and each breath out.

Observe the sensations around and within you — people chatting nearby, rain falling, clock ticking, sore shoulders. Observe without judgment. Enjoy being fully present in the moment.

Now turn your attention to your thoughts. Visualize them passing through your mind like floating clouds – avoid holding onto them and avoid pushing them away. Let them come. Let them go. Try this for 5 minutes and watch how your mindset begins to shift.
