Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden said he won’t reveal his opinion on expanding the Supreme Court until after the election.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the former vice president said, “You’ll know my opinion on court-packing when the election is over.”
“It’s a great question,” he said. “And I don’t blame you for asking it, but you know the moment I answer that question, the headline in every one of your papers will be about that other than focusing on what’s happening now. The election has begun. There’s never been a court appointment once an election has begun.”
Biden has repeatedly refused to give his opinion on the topic, saying that if he did, it would “become the issue.”
Others in his party have suggested that expanding the court would be the right action for Congress to take if Republicans ultimately secure the placement of Judge Amy Coney Barrett.
Many Democrats have said that, after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, it was dishonest of Republicans to move forward with a nominee given their unwillingness to hold a vote on Judge Merrick Garland in 2016.
