At least eight people are dead and 11 sustained “serious but non-life threatening” injuries after a motorist driving a rented truck veered onto a bicycle path in Manhattan Tuesday afternoon, the NYPD has confirmed.
The event is being investigated as a terrorist attack.
The suspect, who was driving a Home Depot rental truck, struck multiple people as he drove more than 10 blocks down the bike path before swerving into a school bus. Video footage shows the driver emerging and brandishing what appeared to be guns—police later said a paintball gun and a pellet gun were recovered at the scene. Officials said the driver shouted “Allahu Akbar” and ran through traffic before being shot in the stomach by officers and taken into custody.
A U.S. counterterrorism official told NBC News that no outside groups had claimed responsibility for the attack.
