Want to take incumbent protection and partisan wrangling out of the redistricting process? Well, in Virginia, that could mean three or four congressional incumbents having to move if they want to run for re-election in 2012.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell’s independent, bipartisan redistricting commission was presented with draft maps on Tuesday that are not likely to be warmly received by legislators when they reconvene next month to redraw lines for state House, Senate and Congressional districts based on figures from the 2010 Census.
One map pushed Reps. Frank Wolf, Randy Forbes and Morgan Griffith out of the districts in which they live, and a second shoved House Majority Leader Eric Cantor out of his as well, the Washington Post reported.
The commission, chaired by longtime Virginia political analyst Bob Holsworth, is merely advisory, and state legislators (thankfully, for these four) are not bound by its recommendations.
