Weight-management classes and 24-week fitness and nutrition challenges are part of a Healthy Heart Fitness and Nutrition education and outreach program coming to Prince George’s County.
The program will focus on the county’s blacks, Latinos, women and children — all considered part of an underserved population in the area.
It’s being paid for by a donation to the American Heart Association Greater Washington Region from two builders. MTM Builder/Developer of Upper Marlboro and Timberlake Homes of Annapolis gave what the American Heart Association is calling a “generous contribution.” The money will pay for a program that works to lower the county’s risk for cardiovascular disease, which is Maryland’sleading cause of death.
The initiative will be coordinated by Greater Baden Medical Services, the Prince George’s County Health Department and area churches. The program will be run out of various sites in the county and include weight management as well as fitness and nutrition challenges. Participants will also be able to join a walking program and consult with health professionals.
