Driver in Berlin truck attack may still be at large

The driver of the truck that slammed into a market in Berlin on Monday may still be at large, and authorities may have arrested a Pakistani refugee who was not involved, German police said Tuesday.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday morning Thomas de Maiziere, Germany’s interior minister, said the suspect police have arrested entered Germany on Dec. 31, 2015, from Pakistan and applied for asylum. He came to the capital in February.

More information about the man isn’t clear as an interpreter for his dialect has yet to be found, de Maiziere told The Guardian. He has reportedly denied involvement.

As of Tuesday morning, 12 people had died in the attack on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg. A man drove a truck into the crowded square about 8:30 p.m. local time when more than 1,000 people were in the area.

About 50 people have been reported injured.

De Maiziere reported the first victim of the attack was a Polish man from whom the driver stole the truck. The man was found dead in the passenger seat of the car, killed by a single gunshot.

At this point, German police do not know of a claim of responsibility for the terrorist attack by any group.
