A star-studded biographical drama about Fox News’ former chairman and CEO Roger Ailes’s history of sexual harassment is underperforming at box offices.
Bombshell, the story of three women who accused Ailes of sexual harassment that led to his resignation, has made only $15 million of its $33 million budget since debuting on Dec. 20.
Though the film generated Academy Award buzz for the performances of Margot Robbie, Nicole Kidman, and Charlize Theron, Bombshell has been panned by critics. The New Yorker’s Anthony Lane called the film “hasty and undigested,” and NPR’s Linda Holmes wrote the film “fails to enlighten.”
Bombshell currently holds a 67% “fresh rating” on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, another recent media-centric film, is also struggling to recoup its $48 million budget, making $16 million since opening on Dec. 16.
