Former President Donald Trump declared in a lengthy statement that he “declined to answer” questions during his deposition before New York Attorney General Letitia James’s office Wednesday.
Trump argued that he was the target of “an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt” and that James “openly campaigned on the policy of ‘Get and Destroy Trump.'” James has been conducting a civil inquiry into whether the Trump Organization improperly manipulated asset valuations for tax and business benefits.

“Accordingly, under the advice of my counsel and for all of the above reasons, I declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution,” he wrote in a post to his Truth Social platform.

James had battled Trump and two of his children, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr., for months in court to enforce a subpoena demanding testimony. Her office issued the subpoena last year, and the family filed a flurry of court challenges. Eventually, a judge quashed the trio’s appeals and demanded their compliance.
Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump have reportedly already delivered testimony for the attorney general’s inquiry.
Coinciding with his lengthy statement disparaging the inquiry, Donald Trump also posted a slew of scathing videos Wednesday bashing James and highlighting past comments she made vowing to be a “pain in the a**” to him.
In 2019, James opened the sprawling inquiry into the Trump family empire in response to testimony former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen gave to Congress about the Trump Organization’s business dealings. Cohen asserted that the company would increase its valuations when pursuing business deals and downgrade its valuations to save on taxes.
While Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, James has claimed in court filings that her office has found evidence to support some of Cohen’s allegations. The former president explained that he once questioned why innocent people would plead the Fifth, but now he knows why.
“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’ Now I know the answer to that question. When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded, politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors, and the Fake News Media, you have no choice,” he added in the Truth Social post.
The onetime president also alluded to the recent raid of his lavish resort in Mar-a-Lago Monday as justification for refusing to answer questions. On Monday, the FBI executed a search warrant at his Mar-a-Lago resort as part of an inquiry pertaining to Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified material, Eric Trump told Fox News.
“If there was any question in my mind, the raid of my home, Mar-a-Lago, on Monday by the FBI, just two days prior to this deposition, wiped out any uncertainty. I have absolutely no choice because the current Administration and many prosecutors in this Country have lost all moral and ethical bounds of decency,” Donald Trump added.

Earlier this year, the National Archives and Records Administration obtained about 15 boxes from Mar-a-Lago. The agency discovered classified material in the boxes it retrieved and referred the matter to the Justice Department, which opened an inquiry, according to a letter David Ferriero, the archivist of the United States, sent to Congress. The DOJ has also reportedly been asking witnesses about Trump in its inquiry about the Jan. 6 riot.
Trump is also reportedly facing legal scrutiny from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s investigation into whether crimes were committed in the 2020 election in Georgia. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office was reportedly conducting a criminal investigation into his business dealings but was apprehensive about his prospects of successfully charging Trump in the case.
