Metro committee backs new Silver Line names

Metro’s new Silver Line will have more memorable names for its station.

A Metro committee backed a set of names on Thursday for the eight stations currently under construction as part of the Dulles rail project  — the same names that Fairfax County approved on Tuesday.

The new names are: McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill, Wiehle-Reston East, Reston Town Center, Herndon and Innovation Center.

Previously the selected names had included lots of repeated words that people found confusing, for example, Tysons-McLean, Tysons I & II, Tysons Central and Tysons-Spring Hill Rd.

So officials sought help from the public. An online survey attracted more than 16,000 respondents, who suggested the winning write-in option of Innovation Center.

Metro’s full board of directors still needs to approve the list. The Silver Line, though, isn’t expected to open until at least late 2013.
