Psaki warns oligarchs latest yacht and villa seizures are ‘just the beginning’

The White House issued another warning to Russia’s oligarchs, telling them that the United States and its allies would not stop seizing their villas and yachts.

President Joe Biden’s press secretary ticked through a list of yachts, superyachts, and properties seized by Western authorities in response to sanctions to punish Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“That is just the beginning,” Jen Psaki said.

The White House recently announced a Justice Department task force to search out the property of Russian oligarchs and stop them from evading sanctions. Led by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Attorney General Merrick Garland, the group of international finance and justice ministers will meet Wednesday.

Psaki said five yachts owned by people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin had been seized, including a 300-foot superyacht owned by Sergei Chemezov. The Treasury Department sanctioned Chemezov, the CEO of Russian defense conglomerate Rostec, alongside other prominent Russian executives and Putin allies as the war escalated.
