Bolivia’s interim president tests positive for coronavirus

The interim president of Bolivia confirmed she has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Posting to Twitter on Thursday, Jeanine Anez relayed an optimistic message about her diagnosis and said she plans to work remotely while she recovers.

“I am fine, I will work from my isolation,” Anez tweeted. “Together, let’s get ahead.”

Anez, a former deputy leader of the Bolivian Senate who took power after the 2019 resignation of Evo Morales, said she feels “strong” and thanked supporters for their messages of strength.

“I feel well, I feel strong, I am going to keep working remotely from my isolation, and I want to thank all the Bolivians who are working to help us in this health crisis,” the interim president added.

Officials in the nation have banned mass gatherings after cases surged in recent weeks. Bolivia’s Health Minister Maria Eidy Roca also tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday.

Anez joins other top world leaders such as the United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in testing positive for the highly contagious disease.
