Trump predicts Herschel Walker will be an ‘even better’ senator in endorsement

Former President Donald Trump threw his support behind former college football star Herschel Walker, endorsing his longtime friend and political novice in the 2022 race for Senate in Georgia.

Trump, who publicly urged Walker to run months before he announced his bid, called the former University of Georgia running back “a patriot and an outstanding American” in extending his “complete and total endorsement.”

“He embodies ‘America First’ and the winning spirit of Georgia,” Trump said in a statement Thursday. “Herschel is tough on Crime and Borders, and he will always stand in support of Law Enforcement, Military, and our Vets.”

“He will fight hard for our Second Amendment and Voter Integrity. Herschel Walker will never let you down,” Trump added. “He was a great football player and will be an even better U.S. Senator — if that is even possible.”

Walker filed paperwork to enter the Georgia Senate race on Aug. 24, announcing his campaign the next day.

“In the United States Senate, I will stand up for conservative values and get our country moving in the right direction. It is time to have leaders in Washington who will fight to protect the American Dream for everybody,” he said in a statement.

Walker will face first-term incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat, who, along with fellow Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff, successfully wrestled control of Georgia’s two Senate seats away from Republicans in January 2020.

Warnock defeated Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler in a special runoff election on Jan. 5 to finish the remaining two years of the term of former Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired in 2019 for health reasons.

Georgia’s November 2022 Senate contest is a regularly scheduled election, with a full six-year term and the Senate majority on the line. Democrats and Republicans are currently evenly split 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris’s tiebreaking vote giving Democrats the narrow majority.
