House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies prior to undergoing surgery in December, he told reporters this week.
The California Republican said that he was tested for the virus antibodies ahead of elbow surgery in December and the results came back positive.
A doctor told McCarthy that he likely contracted the coronavirus “within the last two months, and this was in December.”

McCarthy said he received the COVID-19 vaccine while his blood work was being analyzed and that he had frequently tested negative for the virus over the prior months.
The congressman said he suspects that he contracted the coronavirus “in that short time plane, probably right before the election or somewhere like that.”
The vaccine is available to all House and Senate lawmakers. About 75% of House members have received the vaccine, and dozens more have recovered from the virus.

McCarthy said he was shocked to learn he had the antibodies because he was never sick, nor were any members of his staff.
“I didn’t know it … and nobody on my staff got it either,” he said.
