China opens first 1,000-bed coronavirus hospital

China opened its first hospital built to handle the coronavirus after it converted a building into a medical center with 1,000-bed capacity.

The Dabie Mountain Regional Medical Center became operational Tuesday, and patients were sent there at 10:30 p.m. local time, according to local media. The hospital, which is located southwest of Wuhan in Huanggang, was completed in two days.

The construction was finished just as China confirmed it had another 769 cases of the virus in just a 24-hour period. So far, thousands have been infected, and more than 100 have died from the disease.

United Airlines announced Tuesday they were suspending some flights to China to stem the spread of the virus. Chinese President Xi Jinping called the virus a “demon” as the country continues to struggle with containing it.
