Hillary Clinton is waiting for her opportunity to enter the 2020 Democratic primary, according to former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.
“Secretary Clinton has said that she’s not running, but you know she’s in the bullpen waiting for the call,” Bannon said Wednesday during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
Bannon suggested that Clinton was holding out for the Democratic Party to contact her before launching a presidential campaign, in the event a candidate who can defeat President Trump doesn’t emerge by the fall.
“And they’re going to fall in line with whoever they think can beat Donald Trump,” Bannon said.
Bannon doesn’t anticipate that any Democrat will defeat Trump in the 2020 election, however.
Clinton announced this month she has no plans to launch a presidential campaign in 2020, but reiterated that she will keep “speaking out.”
“I want to be sure that people understand I’m going to keep speaking out,” Clinton said in an interview with News 12 Westchester. “I’m not going anywhere. What’s at stake in our country, the kinds of things that are happening right now are deeply troubling to me.”
Democratic candidates that have already announced they are running in 2020 include Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Cory Booker of New Jersey.
