Gasoline price drop slows considerably, expected to remain consistent

What you see is what you may pay for a while.

The rapid free fall in gasoline prices in Maryland from August through September has slowed considerably, but prices may continue to drop slightly, according to Towson-based AAA-MidAtlantic.

Prices were falling as much as 17 cents each week for the past 11 weeks, AAA reported recently. The price drop slowed in October and has been basically flat the past two days. Maryland prices peaked at $3.10 per gallon on July 24 and July 27.

On Tuesday, the nation?s average gasoline price for a gallon of self-service fuel was $2.14 per gallon, unchanged from Monday, according to AAA?s Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

A month ago, the average price in Maryland was $2.24 per gallon, but last week the average price was $2.15 per gallon, the same price as a week earlier.

In Baltimore, the average price for a gallon of self-service regular gasoline was $2.11 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA. That too is the same price as a day earlier. The average price in Baltimore was $2.20 per gallon a month ago.

“We continue to expect oil and gas prices to remain under downward pressure throughout the rest of the month and perhaps through December and the New Year,” said Ragina Averella, public and government affairs manager for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Averalla added that some people believe the results of Tuesday?s general election could cause gas prices to rise.

“We feel that the election won?t have a deep impact on the price of oil,” Averalla said. She said gasoline prices have fallen recently because the trading price for a barrel of crude oil has stayed about $60 per barrel. Maryland?s average of $2.14 per gallon ranks the Free State 38th highest in gasoline prices in the nation.
