The State Department said Thursday that it doesn’t have “any reason” to think that a Romanian hacker accessed Hillary Clinton’s private server when she was secretary of state.
The hacker, who goes by the name “Guccifer,” said it was “easy” to access her server. Clinton’s campaign team said Wednesday that there was “no basis” for that claim, and State backed up the campaign on Thursday.
“We don’t have any reason to believe that it might be true,” spokesman Mark Toner told reporters.
Toner said he couldn’t comment on how secure Clinton’s server was, and said it would be “inappropriate” to comment on that given the ongoing investigation.
When asked if State has any reason to believe Guccifer, he said, “We don’t.”
Republicans have pushed for answers about Clinton’s email server for more than a year, and have explored whether she violated any laws by using an non-secure server to conduct government business.
