Police: Pick up your trash!

Litterers beware: This month, police around the region are cracking down on those who don’t pick up their trash.

Local agencies are participating in a litter enforcement month to raise awareness of littering and illegal dumping and to punish rule-breakers. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Alice Ferguson Foundation organized the initiative to raise awarness about the effects of litter on the Potomac watershed.

Participating agencies include police in Montgomery County, Arlington and Alexandria, and the Maryland Natural Resources police. Police said they are being especially vigilant in enforcing litter violations. Penalties for littering can include fines and jail time, depending on the amount of trash.

The initiative began earlier this month and runs through May 7.
