Kentucky Democrat says a primary ‘might be helpful’ after disastrous Amy McGrath campaign rollout

Kentucky’s only Democratic representative said there should probably be a Democratic primary after the rocky start to the campaign of Amy McGrath, who is running to unseat Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Despite hauling in more than $2 million in the first 24 hours of her campaign, McGrath had to explain why she compared Donald Trump winning the presidency to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. She also changed her answer twice in one day on whether she would have voted to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

“It could have gone smoother,” Rep. John Yarmuth told the Courier-Journal. “By her own admission she made a pretty significant mistake and corrected it. I hope she prepares a little bit better for the rest of the campaign. I’m sure she will.”

“I think a primary might be helpful in this situation,” he added. “Because whoever is going to face off against Mitch McConnell really needs to get their game in shape. Certainly Amy would be a favorite in any kind of primary, but I think it would help her and if somebody else could beat her they would have demonstrated their strength as well.”

After the interview was published in which she said she believed Kavanaugh’s accusers but would have still voted for him, McGrath said she made a mistake and would not have voted for him.

Prior to running for Senate, McGrath was a Marine Corps fighter pilot and a House candidate, who lost in a Democrat-friendly district during the 2018 midterm elections.
