As the COVID-19 walls close in around him, Biden tests negative

President Joe Biden tested negative for the coronavirus after top Democratic lawmakers and members of his own Cabinet have tested positive in recent days.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office announced Thursday morning that she tested positive after attending multiple events at the White House earlier this week.

Though Pelosi stood directly to Biden’s right during a bill signing Wednesday afternoon, the White House said the president “is not considered a close contact of Speaker Pelosi as defined by the CDC.”

“The President saw Speaker Pelosi at White House events and had brief interactions over the course of the last two days,” officials said in a statement. “Last night as a part of his regular testing cadence, the President tested negative. He will continue to be tested regularly. The President wishes Speaker Pelosi a speedy recovery.”

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Attorney General Merrick Garland both announced they had tested positive on Wednesday after attending the annual Gridiron Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday. The event is currently being discussed as a “super spreader,” as numerous lawmakers and reporters in attendance all tested positive earlier this week.

Jamal Simmons, Vice President Kamala Harris’s communications director, also tested positive after attending the Gridiron Dinner. The White House labeled Harris a close contact of Simmons.
