Joe Biden said he does not believe he has as large of a lead on his 2020 Democratic opponents as the polls show.
“I don’t believe the polls right now, guys,” he said Tuesday at a fundraiser held at the law offices of Weitz & Luxenberg P.C. in Manhattan.
“This is a marathon. It is true we’re ahead. It is true we feel good about where we’re going. That means two things: One, there’s a target on my back,” he said. “And two, things are gonna change. It always does,” he said. “It always does.”
Polls have shown Biden ahead of other Democrats in the 2020 race since before he even announced his candidacy.
He has a double-digit lead on Sen. Bernie Sanders, his closest challenger, according to a RealClearPolitics average of national polls. Biden sits at 32.4% support while Sanders has 15.2%.
Biden’s primary rivals have criticized the former vice president for being too centrist, as well as his age.
