House Democrats subpoena Rick Perry in impeachment inquiry

House Democrats have subpoenaed Energy Secretary Rick Perry to produce documents related to their impeachment inquiry of President Trump’s discussions with Ukraine.

“Recently, public reports have raised questions about any role you may have played in conveying or reinforcing the President’s stark message to the Ukrainian President,” wrote the three Democratic House committee chairmen leading the impeachment inquiry.

Foreign Affairs Chairman Eliot Engel, Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, and Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings sent the subpoena to Perry on Thursday.

Last week, Trump told GOP lawmakers that Perry had asked the president to make the call. Trump also said he did not want to make the call in the first place but did so at Perry’s urging. Perry later clarified that he asked Trump to make the call to talk about energy policy.

Democrats have subpoenaed Perry to find out if he was involved in Trump’s request that Ukraine look into allegations that former Vice President Joe Biden used U.S. taxpayer money to save his son, Hunter Biden, from a potential corruption investigation.
