A second man has been charged in the murder of former police Capt. David Dorn, who was shot and killed in St. Louis by looters earlier this month.
Mark Jackson, 22, was charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, robbery, and burglary last week, local outlets reported Monday. He is being held without bond. Surveillance video from the store where Dorn was killed reportedly showed Jackson and a third suspect fleeing the scene, and his debit card and fingerprints were found in the store.
Authorities charged Stephan Cannon, 24, with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, and three counts of armed criminal action, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm, earlier in June. No bond was allowed, according to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office.
Another man, 27-year-old Jimmie Robinson, was also arrested for his alleged involvement with the case and was charged with burglary, armed criminal action, stealing, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Dorn, 77, was shot and killed on June 2 when looters broke into a pawnshop during protests following George Floyd’s death. He had spent more than three decades with the St. Louis Police Department before becoming the police chief in Moline Acres for five years. He was found shot on the sidewalk outside the pawnshop owned by his friend after going there to investigate an alarm system going off.
“[Dorn] was murdered by looters at a pawn shop. He was the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to,” the Ethical Society of Police of St. Louis wrote. “Violence is not the answer, whether it’s a citizen or officer.”
Hundreds of people came out to pay respects to Dorn during a public service last week.
“I broke out in tears immediately because I couldn’t believe that something that devastating and horrible could happen to such a wonderful and incredible human being,” Dorn’s friend, Helen Martin, said.
