Free drug program at Midwest grocery store chain reaches 50 million

A large grocery store chain in the Midwest has recently surpassed more than 50 million drugs given for free to their customers.

Meijer’s program allows for anyone to participate, so long as they receive a prescription from a doctor. The customers pay nothing regardless of co-pay or insurance for the drugs eligible.

Meijer is a family-owned company that is known for its philanthropy, with a separate branch of the company dedicated to giving back. They have sponsored the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association, as well as starting their own program known as the Simply Give program, which raised $1.1 million to fight hunger in the Midwest.

Most recently, Peter Meijer, the grandson heir to the company, announced he would run for independent Rep. Justin Amash’s congressional seat in 2020.

The program began in 2006 as a way to lower healthcare costs for customers, and it has given out nearly 2.3 million drugs in just Michigan this past year. Meijer estimates that it has given over $650 million in prescription drugs.
