Most say Trump has done ‘enough’ to help Puerto Rico

The majority of U.S. voters believe the federal government “has done enough” to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria’s devastation, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Wednesday.

Fifty-two percent of registered voters say the Trump administration’s response in the three weeks since the hurricane swept over the Caribbean island has been adequate. Just under one-third of respondents think the government should do more, according to the Oct. 5-9 survey.

Almost half of those asked think the U.S. territory should be given statehood. One-quarter say Puerto Rico should remain a territory, but 47 percent want the island to become the 51st state.

Half of Democrats support the idea of statehood compared to 36 percent of Republicans.

The online poll was conducted among 1,996 registered voters nationwide and had a 2 percentage point margin of error.
