The music group Spyro Gyra is scheduled to headline the Silver Spring Jazz Festival planned for Sept. 9, Montgomery County officials announced via a news release.
The group, members of which live in the New York City suburbs as well as the Washington area, have been playing together for more than three decades, according to its Web site.
The festival, now in its third year, will begin at 2 p.m. with the Jazz Ensemble Caravan, a parade of youth jazz ensembles, followed by the bands in competition. Three bands, including participants from the Albert Einstein Jazz Ensemble, the Eubie Blake Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Academy of Music, are scheduled to perform.
Professional musical acts are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., with Spyro Gyra scheduled at 9 p.m. Other artists scheduled to appear include Michelle Walker, the Annapolis-based Afro Bop Alliance, Marcus Johnson and Terrell Stafford.
Johnson and Stafford are from the area. Stafford also received a bachelor?s degree in music education from the University of Maryland.
