Trump slumps, falls to lowest support since Labor Day

Support for Donald Trump has fallen to its lowest point since the beginning of September, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Monday.

Just 36 percent of voters currently support the Republican presidential hopeful in a four-way race against Hillary Clinton (42 percent) and third-party candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. Trump had stood at 39 percent support prior to the release of a controversial audio tape in which he could be heard making lewd comments about women. The billionaire has since been accused of sexual assault or harassment by nearly a dozen women.

Trump has ratcheted up his criticism of the media in the wake of the latest scandals engulfing his campaign, accusing journalists of colluding with the Clinton campaign in an effort to ensure she defeats him on Nov. 8. To some extent, the GOP nominee’s message appears to be resonating with voters.

Nearly six in 10 respondents said it is important that questions be raised about the electoral process, voter fraud and the accuracy of the upcoming election results. And just half of Trump supporters said they are confident that their votes will be counted on Election Day.

Independent voters are especially concerned about the accuracy of the elections, as just 68 percent are confident their vote will be registered correctly, compared to 80 percent of Republicans and 91 percent of Democrats.

The survey of 1,737 likely general election voters was conducted between Oct. 13-15. Results contain a margin of error plus or minus 2 percentage points.
